Carl M. Brophy (Of Counsel)


Carl M. Brophy joined the firm in 1949 and served for many years as the senior and managing partner, until he withdrew as a
partner and became of counsel to the firm in 1999. He continues in practice, specializing in estate planning, including trust and probate, corporate, business and real estate law and timber and logging law.

Carl has been active in his church, the community and the Oregon State Bar, having served on numerous bar committees and as a member and Chairman of the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners, a member of the Board of Governors, the Board of Directors of the Professional Liability Fund, and as a member of the Board of Directors and president of the Oregon Law Foundation. He
is a charter fellow of the Oregon Law Foundation, a life fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and has been an active supporter of the Campaign For Equal Justice.

During the civil rights movement, he served as a volunteer civil rights lawyer in Mississippi, for which he was one of the recipients of the Oregon ACLU's E. B. McNaughton Civil Liberties Award in 1998. In 1999 he was a recipient of the Award of Merit, the Oregon State Bar's highest honor, for his outstanding contributions to the bar, the bench
and the community. In service to the community, Carl has been past president of the board of the YMCA of Medford, a member of the board of visitors at the University of Oregon School of Law, a member of the school board of the Archdiocese of Portland, and a member of various other community boards and committees. Carl served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps in World War II. He attended Oregon State University, the University of Southern California and the University of Oregon, from which he received his undergraduate and law degrees.

He enjoys reading, hunting, fishing, skiing, tennis and travel. He and his wife, Retha, have five children and twelve grandchildren, with whom they share frequent family gatherings and activities.
